The capital of Asturias

Oviedo is the capital of the Principality of Asturias and the seat of the Junta General del Principado. The Cathedral of San Salvador stands on the old Chapel of the Saviour, founded in the time of Alfonso II, and holds relics from that period, such as the Holy Shroud. The church-palace of Santa María del Naranco is another landmark of the city's heritage. The northern way, the oldest pilgrimage route to Santiago, passed through Oviedo.

The HUCA and Teatinos

The Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) is on Avenida de Roma, on the La Cadellada estate, at the northern edge of the city. The current complex opened in January 2014 and has 1,039 beds. Teatinos, the residential neighbourhood close to the hospital, has supermarkets, pharmacies, cafés and cider houses.

Oviedo's centre

The old town and the Cathedral of San Salvador are in the centre, next to the main shopping area, with shops, restaurants, cafés and cider houses. From the Teatinos neighbourhood the centre is 1.7 km away: about 25 minutes on foot or 5 by taxi.

Getting here and day trips

Oviedo has a train station and a bus station. By car from the city, Gijón is about 25 minutes away, Avilés 30, Asturias airport 45 and Covadonga, in the Picos de Europa, just over an hour.
