Nerja: coast, mountains and old town
Nerja is in the Axarquía-Costa del Sol area, about 52 km east of Málaga and about 100 km from Granada. It has some 9 km of coastline, with beaches such as Burriana (the largest, about 800 m long), Calahonda, El Salón, Carabeo and El Playazo. The Almijara mountain range covers most of the municipality, and its northern part belongs to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park.
The Balcón de Europa
The Balcón de Europa is a viewpoint in the town centre overlooking the sea. According to tradition, King Alfonso XII gave it its name after visiting the area in 1885. From the Nerja Centro apartment it is a 5-minute walk.
The Nerja Caves and Maro
The Nerja Caves are next to the village of Maro, a hamlet of Nerja. They have almost 5 km of galleries and are a site of cultural interest; they contain paintings of seals that may be cave art about 42,000 years old. Maro also has the Águila aqueduct, a 19th-century structure of four tiers of superimposed arches, and the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliff.
Getting here and getting around
From Málaga airport, the drive to Nerja is about 1 hour. An intercity bus line, the M-362, links Málaga with Nerja, and another line connects Nerja with neighbouring Frigiliana. Street parking is scarce in summer; it is worth looking at the public car parks in the centre.
